Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing. Lots of pining and both Arek and Matt being totally oblivious about the other one's thoughts and feelings. As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. While they were soft and fluffy and full of long glances and warm smiles and boys soft for each other, this is a story of pining and obliviousness. Lukens (they/them) where Carry On meets Arthurian legend in a funny, subversive, queer tale about what happens after the chosen. ![]() This book deviates in style from Lukens' previous ones ( In Deeper Waters and The Rules duology). So This is Ever After is a new LGBTQ YA Fantasy novel by F.T. It is both realistic and sarcastic at many points (such as the princess and the tower). ![]() Right from the start, the dialogue has you cackling, because the group of questers that toppled the evil ruler and freed the kingdom is, well, a group of young people tired from the hardships and with no idea of what to do after they fulfill the prophect. So This Is Ever After is an ode to pining, a nod to fantasy tropes, self-sarcastic, hilarious and answering the question of what happens after the hero's journey ends. ![]()
