If the historian is committed to democracy, as most textbook writers are, then the agents of history are presumed to be “the people.” We the people need a national history because, after all, America still exists, and the course of our history will depend, tautologically, on us-the same us that is also, in theory, history’s readers. ![]() The journalist (.)Ģ Most textbooks push that ending back by returning, in those final pages that few students ever read, to founding principles-to the truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence, say, or in the Constitution’s preamble-and concluding with the hope that American reality will one day meet them. ![]() 1 Sacvan Bercovitch, American Jeremiad (Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1978). ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments The book on the come up![]() ![]() The historian has tackled complicated subjects before, including Catherine the Great and Stalin, but here his aim is to demonstrate human interconnectivity through the machinations and matches made - from the Ming Dynasty through the Arab empire all the way to presidents and oligarchs. If Leah were a weak-willed sack of a girl crying for sympathy, (as stereotypical) then this story would not have been possible. Seems a little unbelievable, right? Though this is written to make you believe. ![]() She learns to fly airplanes while she is living in poverty with next to nothing to eat and still attends school. With a girl labelled as “trailer trash,” Leah, takes the lead role. Echols has taken what would be a stereotypical idea and turned it on its head. What I really like about Such a Rush is the original plot, the amount of emotions, how they guide and motivate the storyline and the unforeseeable twists. People who despise love triangles (like myself), try this! Such a Rush is an emotional, engaging read, and involves one of the most tense and warped love triangles I have ever come across. ![]() |
